Despite the ice producing some unexpected twists and turns – blame the new Zamboni over the novice curling – Anthracite Curling Club’s first night of draws in its 2010 Summer League started Thursday, May 13.
Yes, the new Zamboni housed in the Ice Rink at Coal Street Park did etch itself into the ice a little too much this night, and it may have affected many shots, but 12 teams endured and officially got league play started. Intra-divisional matchups highlighted the night and lines in the proverbial sand were drawn.During the 6 p.m. draws, Team XIII, skipped by J. Guttmann, hung four points on Schoolhouse Rocks, skipped by Alison Piatt, in the final end of that match to escape with an 8-4 victory in Steamboat Division action. The two other Steamboat teams (Team XV and Team XVI) had a bye in Week 1.
In the Stove Division, the league saw its first tie when Lyons and Team XIII could not break a 5-5 deadlock. During the 8 p.m. draws, JEMM defeated Team IX, 6-5, to take an early lead in the division.
Cs+Ds handled the challenge from Cracked Ice in the last draw during the 6 p.m. set. They set the tone in the Chestnut Division with an 8-3 win. Boss Hog-Line and WINOs, the other two Chestnut teams, were off for the night.
All the action in the Buckwheat Division happened late. Schuylkill Blind Squirrels defeated Team RAMROD, 9-3, and were buoyed by four points in the 3rd end. MLC topped Team Flyte in the division’s other draw, 6-2.
