A special request from one of our members …

Hello Curling Friends, This year, I’ll be participating in a very special event called the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure in Philadelphia on Oct. 14, 15, and 16. I’ll walk 60 miles over the course of three days with thousands of other women and men.
Net proceeds from the 3-Day for the Cure fund innovative global breast cancer research and local community programs supporting education, screening and treatment.
Virtually every major advance in the fight against breast cancer in the last 28 years has been impacted by a Komen for the Cure grant.

I’ve agreed to raise at least $2,300 in donations, so I need your help. Would you please consider making a donation? Keep in mind how far I’m walking – and how hard I’ll have to train. Continue reading

Historic day for Anthracite Curling as stones arrive from Canada

The stones have arrived! Joining Harry the truck driver (the one who dressed for the occassion) are Anthracite members (l-r) John Jagozinski, Brandon Jackson, Matt Lyons, Stacey Berkoski and Dave Cawley. (Photo by Alison Piatt)

Thursday may have been one of the biggest days in the recent history of Anthracite Curling Club. The club is now in possession of its very own stones!

Until that night, we had been using leased stones from our governing body, Grand National Curling Club, but thanks to a gracious loan and an available three sets of competitive rocks, Anthracite Curling Club was able to secure its very own set of stones. Continue reading

Did you see Anthracite Curling Club on WNEP?

Anthracite Curling Club was featured on WNEP-TV’s evening and late-night newscasts on Monday, Aug. 1. The club helped anchor Sharla McBride learn the basics of curling for her “Show and Tell” segment, in which she tries her hand (in our case, slide) at different sports.

If you saw Sharla try curling and you’d like to try it as well, we’ve got some opportunities for you to do just that. Please contact Club President Alison Piatt (featured in the video) to make arrangements.

Ice Prep gets us in the game

For the last 15 months or so, we’ve been able to curl thanks in large part to the creative, dedicated and hard-working Ice Crew.

Since the first Learn-to-Curl classes in 2010, we’ve improved the way we store stones, prepare the ice for play, mark lines for houses, pebble the sheets, freeze the hacks and store equipment.

Here is a video compiled by one such member of the Ice Crew, Brandon Jackson. Be sure to thank any member of the Ice Crew the next time you see them:

Anthracite Curling welcomes Misericordia University Curling Club

If you’ve noticed a bit of youthful exuberance on the ice in recent weeks, it is likely attributed to members of Misericordia University Curling Club.

The students took their casual interest in the sport of curling from watching the 2010 Vancouver Olympics to trying the sport on their own when our Club President Alison Piatt introduced them to the sport and invited them to a recent Saturday Night Curling event. They’ve returned ever since and now they’re organized. Continue reading
