C&Ds, Lyons stand alone as league’s only unbeatens

WILKES-BARRE — As we pass the halfway point in the 2010 Summer League season, each conference appears to have its own Evil Empire.

After Week 6 action, one team in each conference remains unbeaten. Teams jockeying for postseason berths can cap their markers and begin drawing targets.

Last week, C&Ds became the Anthracite Curling Club league’s only undefeated and untied team, defeating Team RAMROD, 7-4.

C&Ds is the league’s only team with 4 wins in as many games. They top the Chestnut Division by two points with a game in-hand and are clearly the odds-on favorites in the Fell Conference.

The team continues its tour through the Buckwheat Division in the next two weeks, getting a good gauge on where it stands in the conference.

In the Smith Conference, Lyons has managed to stay on the plus side of some close scorelines and is the only undefeated team. Its tie with Goody’s in Week 1 remains the only “blemish” on Lyons’ mark.

Last week, Lyons turned aside a rejuvenated Schoolhouse Rocks! team, 6-3. SR! drops to 1-5 on the season after competing the previous weekend at the GNCC Arena Club Championships in Vermont.

Like C&Ds, Lyons holds a two-point lead in the Stove Division, with a game in-hand on Goody’s.

Lyons faces Fifteen this week, a team reeling from consecutive defeats. Last week, the team that was looking to supplant first-place Whippersnappers in the Steamboat Division, lost 6-4 to Goody’s.

The win puts Goody’s numerically close to Lyons in the Stove Division, hoping the leaders stumble a bit down the stretch.

Whippersnappers took its first loss of the season last week, and missed a chance to move more than a game ahead of Fifteen in the Steamboat Division. Cracked Ice took down the previously unbeaten side, 7-2.

Cracked Ice has won two straight draws and at 2-2, remains a threat in the Chestnut Division. Falling to the bottom of the division after two straight losses, but only three games played, is Boss Hog-Line, which fell, 3-2, to Stone Cold in a 5-end slog.

The win, combined with 5-2 Blind Squirrels loss to WINOs last week, creates a three-way tie in the Buckwheat Division between the Squirrels, RAMROD, and Stone Cold. MLC is one point behind, with a game in-hand on each.

WINOs’ victory is the team’s third consecutive and puts them just two points behind C&Ds, but in one more game.
