Youth Served in Week Two

Two teams are ruing: “We would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for those meddling teen-agers!”

Team Whippersnappers won in consecutive weeks to start Anthracite Curling Club’s 2010 Summer League, and the performance on May 20 was enough to raise more than a few eyebrows. Whippersnappers topped Goody’s, 11-1, and improved to 2-0 in the early season.

Combined with last week’s win over Schoolhouse Rocks, Whippersnappers has out-scored its opponents 19-6 and is the only 2-0 team in the league. The team also leads the Steamboat Division standings.

Week 2 also featured the debuts of three more teams, two of which had successful starts. Boss Hog-Line shut-out Team XVI in an inter-conference match, 12-0. It was both teams’ first draws of the season. Another first-draw was Team XV, which topped Steamboat Division foe Schoolhouse Rocks, 7-4.

The picture got a little more jumbled in the Buckwheat Division. Week 1 winners faced teams on the losing end of those draws in another week of intra-divisional matchups.

Team RAMROD got its first win of the season, avenging last week’s loss, topping MLC, 6-3. Each team now has identical 1-1 records and are tied for second place in the division. In the other Buckwheat Division match-up, Schuylkill Blind Squirrels and Team Flyte fought to a grueling 4-4, 6-end tie. That leaves the Squirrels atop the division with a 1-0-1 mark.

And while Team IX got a bye for Week 2, Lyons twisted the standings in the Stove Division with a 9-3 victory over previously unbeaten JEMM. Lyons now has a 1-0-1 mark, and is just ahead of JEMM in that table with the aforementioned Goody’s and Team IX trailing.
