It has been a rough 2014 Sochi Olympics for Team USA Curling. And if there’s one thing that could make it all worthwhile it would be to BEAT CANADA!
Coming into play on Sunday, the Men’s team is at 2-4 in the Round Robin with three draws remaining. Technically, they’d need a different type of Miracle on Ice to make the Playoffs and Medal Round.
For the Women’s team, the going’s been a bit rougher. They sit in 10th place in the Round Robin with a 1-6 record.
About that miracle … without having full knowledge of the Olympic tie-break scenario, the U.S. Men would have to win their final three matches and have Canada and Great Britain lose all their draws. They’d also need Norway to at least split their final draws.
The chances are slimmer than slim but in order to provoke the miraculous thoughts any further, it starts with a win against Canada.
Skip John Shuster told Minneapolis Star-Tribune after the team’s heart-breaking loss to Russia yesterday:
“We have to win out and hope for some help now,” he said. “But we can’t think of anything other than the fact that we can do it. I know this team can do it.”
The U.S. Women will also face Canada Sunday at 5 a.m., our time.
Surely, wins against our rivals to the north would put a bittersweet ending to the Sochi Olympics for USA Curling. That’s a lot better than just a bitter ending, eh?
In addition to the Canada matches, the U.S. men will also face Sweden Sunday at 10 a.m. our time. Monday, they play Switzerland at 3 a.m.
The ladies will round out their Sochi experience with a draw against Korea on Monday.
