Statement draws highlight Week 4 in Summer League action

All 12 teams have something to prove and statements to make during Week 4 action of the Anthracite Curling Club 2010 Summer League. Next week marks a Bye for everyone in the league. The June 1 draws will be the last action until June 15, as the Club plans to meet next Tuesday. There will be matchups between undefeated teams, and between teams looking to get off-the-schnide this season.

Most notably, a pair of two-win undefeated division leaders meet at 8 p.m. on Sheet 1. Chestnut Division-leading Cs+Ds (2-0) looks to build off its narrow victory last week when it faces Stove Division leaders Lyons (2-0-1). Both teams endured challenges last week, but earned victories. Cs+Ds defeated WINOs, 4-3, in a back-and-forth affair; and Lyons outlasted Team IX, 7-6, to gain a three-point division lead. A win from either team sets them apart from their divisional competition while a loss certainly isn’t the end of their curling worlds.

At the same time, on Sheet 3, Boss Hog-Line (1-0) returns from a Bye week and off a 12-0 win in its first draw against Buckwheat Division leaders Schuylkill County Blind Squirrels (1-0-1). The Squirrels are currently tied for third in their division, playing its game-in-hand this week as the rest of the teams are idle.

Among those looking for their first win in the young season, Schoolhouse Rocks! (0-3) has fallen late in each of its draws and will have to face another team hungry for its first win in Goody’s (0-2-1) during a 6 p.m. draw on Sheet 2. Schoolhouse Rocks! lost its first two draws in the final end and couldn’t complete a comeback last week despite a spirited effort. After tying in its first match against Stove Division-leading Lyons, Goody’s fell to the young Whippersnappers, 11-1, and last week to Stone Cold, 6-3, in the final end.

Cracked Ice (0-1) looks for its first win in its first draw since the opening week when it faces fellow Chestnut Division foe WINOs (0-1) at 6 p.m., WINOs debuted last week and was edged in a tight draw with first-place Cs+Ds. The result will help sort the Chestnut Division a bit more going into the break as each team will have finally played at least two draws.

Team IX (0-2) has also experienced some tough luck in the early season and can really turn its fortunes heading into the league Bye week in its draw with Steamboat Division leaders Whippersnappers (2-0-1), on Sheet 3 at 6 p.m. Team IX needs a win to stay in the early race in the Stove Division, trailing Lyons by two wins. The Whippersnappers allowed a three-point comeback last week at the hands of Team RAMROD when it looked as though it would become the league’s only 3-0 team. The Whippersnappers figure to be equally as hungry to go into the break on a high note.

And in what could actually be the night’s most compelling draw, undefeated Fifteen (2-0) takes on the up-and-down Team XVI (1-1) on Sheet 2 at 8 p.m.  Fifteen edged MLC last week, 6-5, and can stay right with division-leading Whippersnappers with another win. The same can be said of Team XVI, which avenged its 12-0 loss to Boss Hog-Line in Week 2 with an 8-3 win over Schoolhouse Rocks!.

The following teams are celebrating a Bye week Tuesday: Team RAMROD (1-1-1), MLC (1-2), Stone Cold (1-1-1), JEMM (1-1).
