Undefeateds beaten in Week 7; Cover jinx probed

Going into Week 7 action of the 2010 Summer League, there were two unbeaten teams. At the end of it, there were none.

Stone Cold took down C&Ds, the only undefeated and untied team in the league, 7-5. Skip John Flyte delivered a clutch hammer shot in the 7th end, giving his team a decisive two points. He said the victory was the culmination of a long season already.

“I am very proud of my team,” he said. “We have been playing with broken toes, and sore backs. Our secret is not to over-think anything and just have fun like we were taught. As a team we have only played three times together, and I want to thank everyone who has subbed for Stone Cold.”

The win keeps Stone Cold (3-2-1) near the top of the Buckwheat Division standings. C&Ds (4-1) has suffered its first loss this season and it keeps other teams in the Chestnut Division very much alive in the postseason race.

The league’s other undefeated (tied once) team also lost its Week 7 draw. Lyons, leaders of the Stove Division from the beginning, dropped a 4-2 decision to Fifteen. The loss draws a few teams closer in the postseason race, namely Goody’s, which was idle last week and is just a win behind Lyons.

Fifteen’s victory allowed the team to leap-frog Whippersnappers, which were idle in Week 7, in the Steamboat Division standings After a hot start, and then a two-game stumble, Fifteen regained that early form and has taken temporary control of the postseason berth in the division. They’ll need to keep that form as Whippersnappers still hold a game in-hand on them, and the lead in the division is only one point.

In other Week 7 action …

Blind Squirrels 7, Cracked Ice 3

The Squirrels (3-2-1) maintained its tie atop the Buckwheat Division with the win. Not only did it snap a two-game losing streak, it helped the team keep the necessary pace in the postseason race. For Cracked Ice, the loss ended a two-game winning streak and a missed chance to gain ground in its division race.

Boss Hog-Line 13, MLC 5

BHL showed some signs of the same life it showed in its first draw, defeating a tough MLC team, and evening its record. BHL was able to string a few multiple-point ends together to pull away in what was a close match. BHL gains a game on C&Ds with the win, and is two games behind with one less game played. MLC drops to the bottom of the very close Buckwheat Division race, still with a game in-hand on the leaders and less than two wins back.

JEMM 6, Schoolhouse Rocks! 5

JEMM scored in the final end to escape with a win. The timely victory allowed it to gain two points, and remain third in the Stove Division standings. This is the third of five SR! losses in the final end.

Blarney 6, Work Study 5

Blarney recorded its first win of the season with a close result over Work Study. Work Study missed a chance to stay within a win of the Steamboat Division lead.
